Texas Day Trips

Summer's not over yet, and our real estate agents know there's still plenty of fun to be had. Even though school is in session, summer doesn't officially end until September 23rd! So… if you're not quite ready to let go of the summer vibes, we have a few suggestions for you!

Waco homes for sale are part of a great community that benefits from a strong local economy, lots of family fun, and an assortment of natural wonders to enjoy. Part of what makes living in Waco and surrounding areas so great is the convenience of being centrally located, and being able to enjoy fantastic day trips! It can seem like just about anywhere in Texas is eight hours from anywhere else… but Waco's location and access to I-35 means you are convenient to dozens of day trips that help you make memories to last a lifetime. Why not take advantage of it and hit the road for one of these trips just a few hours away?

So, plan a special day with the family, and get ready to enjoy some fantastic activities a short drive away, as we get ready to wind down our summer! 

Let's take a closer look at day trips near Waco:

  • Dinosaur Valley State Park – 1629 Park Road 59, Glen Rose, TX 76043
    Dinosaur Valley State Park is a favorite for kids, who get to explore the mysterious past of these great beasts in an environment where their legacy has been carefully preserved. Dinosaurs left footprints in the mud around the Paluxy River, and your family is invited to follow in their footsteps. Guided tours are available.

  • Longhorn Cavern State Park – 6211 Park Road 4 South, Burnet, TX 78612
    Longhorn Cavern State Park is also known as the "Cave of Legends." The cavern is one of the most unusual natural wonders you can explore in Texas. Several different tours are offered, including the standard Walking Tour, the Wild Cave Tour, and the Tour Plus Gemstone Mining for the little ones.

  • Jacob's Well Natural Area – 1699 Mt. Sharp Road, Wimberly, TX 78676
    Jacob's Well Natural Area is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and water access requires a reservation under normal circumstances. Sadly, our current drought conditions have affected this. Make sure to keep an eye on the website for updates!  Visitors who wish to hike can visit with no reservation: Peak hiking hours run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., but it's permitted any time the park is open. Swimming is allowed when water levels are safe.

  • Exotic Resort Zoo – 235 Zoo Trail, Johnson City, TX 78636
    Exotic Resort Zoo is a great way to see some of the most fascinating animals from Texas and around the world. You can get a unique tour through the Zoo's grounds on a tractor. The tractor rides leave on the 30-minute mark. With 700 animals and 362 open days per year, it's never a bad time to visit.

  • Aggieland Safari – 18075 FM974, Bryan, TX 77808
    Aggieland Safari is a drive-through attraction divided into different habitats. Although most visitors traverse the grounds by car, there's also a preferred route to see it all on foot. Famous residents such as the bison, antelope, ostrich, yak, emu, zebra, and deer are always popular while staying in your car helps keep it safe for everyone.

  • Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metro Park  - 400 Grove Boulevard Austin, TX 78741
    Part of the Austin Parks Foundation, the Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metro Park is popular for a variety of activities. In the park you'll find trails perfect for hiking, plenty of people enjoying a game of baseball, volleyball, softball, disk golf, and other sports. This park is very popular for sharpening your BMX skills, whether you want to try your hand at it, or consider yourself more of a spectator, you'll find yourself entertained. Make a day out of it, and enjoy the picnic tables and facilities with the entire family! Convenient and accessible parking is just off of S Pleasant Valley Road.

  • Kalahari Resort  - 3001 Kalahari Blvd, Round Rock, TX 78665
    A little over an hour south of Waco, you'll find Kalahari Resort, the self-proclaimed America's Largest Indoor Waterpark Resort & Convention Center. Enjoy the waterpark with a day pass, or stay at the resort for a quick weekend getaway (waterpark admission included in your stay!)

  • San Antonio Riverwalk – San Antonio, Texas
    Dubbed the #1 attraction in Texas, the San Antonio Riverwalk is steeped in history, tradition, but also innovation. An elegant solution to a problem plaguing settlers in the San Antonio area, the riverwalk has become a symbol of San Antonio and Texas as a whole. The riverwalk allows you to enjoy dining experiences, public art, events, shopping, and even stay in a unique setting. When visiting the riverwalk, make sure to stop by these fantastic sites close by (and some accessible through the Riverwalk itself, or just steps away): The Alamo, Tower of the Americas in Hemisfair Park, you can also enjoy great tours such as: mural tours, ghost tours, river cruises or even whiskey tours! Make sure to visit the Historic Pearl in San Antonio, formerly the home to The Pearl Brewery in San Antonio, it is now a thriving community. "The Pearl" seems to have it all, from dining, shopping, events, the exclusive and luxurious Hotel Emma; live music, a fantastic farmers market -open Saturday and Sunday from 9 am-1 pm-, history, office spaces, and even living spaces! Yanaguana Garden, in Hemisfair Park, offers a wide range of activities, just steps from the riverwalk, this fantastic public park with activities for the whole family, like giant checkers, chess, playgrounds and swings for both children and adults, public art, and even coffee shops and restaurants on the premises. If you have time and would like to "window shop" for a home, make sure to visit the King William District in San Antonio, full of homes developed in a mix of Greek, Italianate, and Victorian styles.

  • Camp Fimfo Texas Hill Country– 520 Whitewater Way, New Braunfels, TX 78132
    If you live in Waco, you've heard of Camp Fimfo - Waco, its Hill Country counterpart - Camp Fimfo Texas Hill Country - offers different activities, thrills, and excitement, including THE FIRST ALPINE COASTER IN TEXAS!!! Dubbed 'The Cliff Carver,' this alpine coaster will have you zipping through the Texas hill countryside at speeds of up to 25mph on a "coaster" that utilizes gravity and hand brakes to provide you with an unforgettable experience!

  • Six Flags Over Texas – Arlington, Texas
    No list would be complete without Six Flags Over Texas, the iconic theme park that includes rides, games, and tasty food. Season passes are discounted for the remainder of this summer, and I-35 makes the trip fast and easy from Waco and surrounding areas. Six Flags Over Texas is located in Arlington, Texas; if you'd like to venture south to San Antonio, make sure to check out Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
