If you are considering selling your home soon, you may want to look for small updates and improvements worth making. The right updates can attract lots of positive attention from buyers, helping you sell your home sooner and often at a higher price. One good element to focus on is the bathroom vanity. Generally, a vanity can be spruced up with a small budget, and in a short amount of time. Fun and exciting weekend project anyone? Are you ready to go from builder-grade to custom-made? Here are a few small vanity updates our real estate agents recommend making before selling a home.
- Cover Wood With Matte Paint
Natural and stained wood vanities were quite popular a decade or two ago. Now, many of those vanities look outdated and drab. An easy solution is to paint over the wood with matte-finish paint. It may sound extreme, but trust us…black looks stunning and offers nice contrast if your bathroom is otherwise decorated in light colors. Whatever color you choose, just remember to take into consideration the space as a whole, and how your choice of color affects the entire room. Try small test strips before committing to a large area!
For best results, clean your vanity with a damp cloth and let it dry, sand it if necessary, and coat it in a good primer before applying your paint. If you're uneasy about tackling this project on your own, reach out to friends, family, or even one of our agents that has tackled this particular project before! You can always seek how-to and DIY videos!
- Add a Playful Touch With Subtle Colors
Perhaps your bathroom is small and could use some opening up. Painting your vanity a light shade, perhaps a pastel can really help with this. Try pastel blue, as this will reflect the blue sky from the window, making the bathroom feel larger. If painting over a darker vanity with lighter color paints, use a good primer. You may need two or three coats to ensure the dark color does not shine through.
- Replace the Hardware
Sometimes, changing the hardware is all you need! The right hardware can dress up or dress down a space. When updating a vanity, consider changing the hardware to update the space efficiently and quickly.
Long pulls tend to be more popular than knobs these days. Your hardware does not all have to match, either. Sometimes, it's fun to use one style of hardware on the drawers and another on the cabinet doors, just make sure it does not clash and it looks intentional.
- Replace the Mirror
Is the mirror on or above your vanity small, plain, beat up, or not as well-lit as you would like? Most bathroom vanities have removable mirrors. Remove yours, measure it or the space, depending on what you'd like to do, and see what other mirrors you can find in a style and size that fits your plans!
Even if your bathroom vanity can't accommodate a different mirror, removing the existing one and giving it a detailed clean can make it look fresher. You may also want to apply a coat of paint around the mirror's frame. Consider painting it a new and different color to make it "pop" against the rest of the vanity. Explore! Look at options, consider framed mirrors, backlit mirrors, anti-fog mirrors. Perhaps a smart mirror with a dimmable light function, anti-fog, and weather forecast is your speed?
- Add Trim
If you don't want to paint the whole vanity, an easy alternative is to paint just the trim. Paint around the raised edges of the cabinet doors only. Or, if the vanity base has some detail, try painting just one indented line around that vanity base.
Another similar option is to paint only the cabinet doors and drawers, leaving the rest of your vanity a different color.
Making one or two of these small vanity updates can improve the look of not just your vanity but the whole bathroom.
